We are in need of additional help for various grade level coordinators.  These coordinators build the teams, recruit coaches and lineup some volunteers to help run the meet.  They help run the meets for their age group as well as assist with other age group meets.   Please consider signing up.  If you would like to help out as an age group coordinator, please do not wait for sign-ups.  Please email us immediately at track@eaasports.org  or call 651-686-9674.

There are always volunteer opportunities at each track meet to help with field events and timing.  These are arranged by the age group coordinators and coaches prior to and during the meets.

The Program

The EAA track program exists to introduce and promote the sport of track & field to Eagan’s youth.  Our goal is to stress the importance of team, friendship and good sportsmanship in the track and field experience.   In 2008, we anticipate about 700 children from Grades K to 6th to participate in our program.  Five meets are held Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon, depending on the age group.  There is typically one practice per week.  The cost of the program remains $40 per child.

Running and field events change as your child grows through the program.  Our goal for every age group is for each child to do one field event and run 3 races each meet.  This aids in their skill development and stimulates their interest and enthusiasm in track.  The K-1 ages start off running a distance from 50 to 100 meters (includes two shuttle relay events within the same distance parameters) with field events including the running long jump, standing broad jump, and baseball throw.  When your child moves to the 2nd and 3rd grade, the field events remain the same, but the races are expanded to include the 200 and 400 meters as well as the 4 X 100 meter relay. When your child reaches the grade levels of 4th, 5th and 6th, the events change again.  Field events include the shot put, high jump and running long jump.  Running events are expanded to include the 55-meter hurdles, 800 meter run, 4 X 200 meter and a medley relay race. We plan to continue with the optional 1,600-meter run for kids in grades 4th-6th.

Each child receives a colored ribbon for every race they are in. Ribbons are also awarded to the top 8 field event participants.  The K-3 teams are formed primarily by school as much as possible.  The 4th, 5th and 6th grade team formation also considers previous year performance of the top 20 kids to ensure more balanced teams, more competitive races and a positive experience for everyone.

The weather in the spring can be anything from beautiful to downright nasty.  As was the case last year, meets may be cancelled or rescheduled if it is too wet and/or too cold.  But we're working on arranging five weekends of great weather so that we won't have to worry about that.

News

We have decided to eliminate the team scoring for the 2nd and 3rd graders this year based on how these teams are formed and the events run at these age groups.  We will maintain team scoring for all but the first meets for the 4th graders and the 5th/6th graders.

Scheduling around the many events at the stadium will again be a challenge this year with the high school and lacrosse programs.  The dates for events seem to change with little notice.  This year we will try to keep this web page updated with changes.  We will also continue to email coordinators whenever we are aware of schedule changes.  Feel free to check the high school website calendar also at www.district196.org/ehs.

Top 10 Reminders:

  1. We will have the older age group of athletes run first, so that the newcomers (Kindergarteners, 2nd graders and 4th graders) can see how the event is run before they actually have to run it.  The exception will be the high jump event where the 4th graders will jump first.

  2. Kindergarten through third grade kids are not permitted to wear spikes.  Fourth through sixth grade kids may wear spikes.  Only 1/8” pyramid spikes are permitted, no needle spikes are allowed.

  3. At each meet no child shall run in more than one race more than the fewest number of races run by any other teammate. E.g., if any team member has run in only one (1) race, no other team member may run in more than two (2) races; if all team members have run in two (2) races, no other team member may run in more than three (3) races, etc.

  4. In the field events, no child will participate in any field event more than twice during the season.

  5. For the start of each race all runners should report to the starting area immediately upon hearing the first call of the event.  There will only be two (2) calls announcing each event. It is incumbent upon the coaches and parents to listen to the calls from the announcers throughout the meet.

  6. All meets will be held at the Eagan High School Track.  All ground rules imposed by Eagan High School are to be observed.  This includes no smoking on the school grounds.

  7. All litter is to be disposed of properly.  It is the responsibility of all participants, coaches, volunteers, and spectators to insure the track area is policed for trash at the end of each practice or meet. At the discretion of the Track Director, the meet may be stopped for all attendees to participate in picking up litter and trash.

  8. No bicycles allowed on the track or infield. High Jump pits are for competition only and are not to be jumped or played on.

  9. The football infield is generally off limits to all participants, coaches and spectators. Team gatherings are to occur in designated areas only.

  10. The decision to cancel a meet due to inclement weather will be made by the Track Director in consultation with the grade coordinators. Make‑up meets will be scheduled if opportunity exists. In general, rain, in and of itself, will not be grounds for cancellation.
